Winter Weather and Your Roof: Why Now Is The Time To Call The Experts

Winter exposes every weakness in a roof system. Freeze and thaw, wind-driven rain, heavy leaf fall and low winter sun combine to turn minor defects into leaks, damp and disruption. The cost is rarely limited to a repair invoice. It often includes lost trading hours, frustrated tenants and insurance complications. RPMG’s winter programme is built to keep commercial roofs watertight and compliant without loading risk onto in-house teams. We take responsibility for inspection, access, documentation and remedial works, and we deliver it around your operation.

Where winter creates problems

Gutters and Downpipes

Gutters and downpipes are the first to show strain. Cold snaps and seasonal debris reduce capacity and force water to track behind flashings, which in turn accelerates internal damage. Our high-level teams restore function and provide the evidence pack that insurers expect.

Skylights

Skylights and other penetrations are another frequent source of winter ingress. Ageing gaskets and tired laps fail under contraction, and what begins as a minor weep becomes a visible stain inside the building. We renew seals, rebuild details where required and confirm the surrounding roof area is performing as a system rather than a collection of parts.

Gravity Drainage

Flat roofs with gravity drainage are vulnerable when ponding persists and grates look clear from above but are restricted below. Winter rainfall then overwhelms the area and compromises nearby details. We reinstate effective drainage, verify secondary overflows and return the surface to predictable behaviour.

Siphonic Drainage

Siphonic drainage needs full-bore flow and balanced pipework to prime correctly. Debris at inlets and subtle changes in support can undermine that balance just when rainfall peaks. We clean, check and test so that both primary and secondary routes operate as expected in line with BS 8490:2025.

Coatings

Coatings and membranes suffer from reduced flexibility in the cold. Micro-cracking at laps and around details grows with each freeze and thaw, allowing water to exploit the weakest line. We identify those risk locations and apply targeted liquid waterproofing within manufacturer temperature windows to stabilise performance through the season.

Why bring RPMG in now

Speed and safety matter most in winter. Our IPAF trained technicians arrive with the right plant and a clear scope, so work is carried out quickly and safely without improvisation. Every visit produces dated photographs, condition notes and a record of remedial actions, which protects you in the event of a claim or audit. We plan around trading hours and tenant operations, keeping disruption to a minimum, and we act as a single accountable partner for surveys, cleaning, minor repairs, coatings and drainage diagnostics.

RPMG now offers drone roof surveys that deliver rapid, high resolution coverage of entire roof areas without putting people at height. Our UAV teams capture detailed imagery and optional thermal scans to highlight heat loss, trapped moisture and other anomalies that are hard to see from the deck. This approach reduces the need for scaffolding or MEWPs, lowers access costs and minimises disruption for tenants. The output is a geo-tagged report with stills, short clips and clear annotations, along with orthographic maps that reveal ponding and defective details. Repeat flights provide a verifiable condition record, so you can evidence improvements after coatings and drainage works and plan future spend with confidence.

Winter turns small roof defects into big bills. Let us keep water moving and risk under control.”

Signs you should not ignore

If overflows occur during ordinary rainfall, if skylights leave halos of staining after a cold snap, if flat areas drain slowly or leave persistent ponds, or if siphonic outlets gurgle and fail to prime, your roof needs attention. Insurers increasingly ask for pre-winter assessments and post-storm checks. We deliver both, with the remedial capability to close risk on the spot.

What you receive

Our winter readiness service provides a site-specific assessment, a prioritised plan with fixed costs and immediate action on high-risk items. We then set out a maintenance schedule for the remainder of the season so you can plan with confidence rather than react to the next weather front.

Book a winter roof readiness visit with RPMG. We will assess gutters and downpipes, skylights and penetrations, gravity drainage and siphonic systems, carry out the required remedial works and supply full compliance documentation. Contact RPMG to schedule your survey this week.

A lack of maintenance can lead to lost trading hours, frustrated tenants and insurance complications.
